The soybean flaking machine is used to obtain the elongated flakes of
soybean. The flaking machine is made up of steel rollers, hopper,
mainframe collecting tray and drive mechanism. Rollers are of different
diameters which press and elongate the moist grains. Flake machine is
drive by electric motors through belt and pulleys and the roller is
driven by spur gears. Soybean gets flattened once they are fed between
the moving rollers. The average thickness of the flakes are determined
by the pressure of the rollers which can be regulated easily. The
contact surface between the oilseed tissues and the solvent, increases
due to flaking.
Flaking lead to the disruption of oilseed cells thereby making oilseed
droplets more available for solvent extraction. Maintenance of the
flaking roll is essential as they are prone to wear. To avoid this,
rolls are regrounded from time to time.
